Herniated Disc Treatment In Malta

Herniated Disc Injuries

Injured discs (herniated, bulging, prolapsed) can be a significant source of low back and leg pain, and are significant injuries that require aggressive and skilled care to achieve full recovery without persistent pain or recurrent episodes of pain.

As is the case with all back injuries, correct diagnosis is the most important first step.  This  allows us to choose treatments that are proven effective for disc injuries specifically. Herniated disc related back and extremity pain is commonly confused with sacroiliac or hip problems, which leads to a delay in proper treatment and effective pain relief.  We determine you have a disc injury and provide you with treatments that work.

Does This Sound Like You

Lumbar Disc Injuries may cause some or all of these symptoms:

  • Severe back and/or leg pain
  • Minimal to no relief with pain-relieving medications, heat or ice
  • Pain that is worse (in the back and/or leg) with bending forward
  • Pain that may worsen with prolonged sitting
  • Pain that is worsened when changing positions
  • Severe pain and stiffness with getting out of bed in the morning
  • Pain that hasn’t improved with prior care
  • Pain that worsens with lifting

Why People With Disc Injuries Choose Us

  • Careful differentiation of herniated discs vs other causes of pain
  • Focus on effective and quick relief and specific rehabilitation for lasting results
  • Individualized treatment approach
  • Extensive experience with complex spine and pelvic conditions
  • A Group Rehab program option that has a long track record of success with speeding up treatment results, reducing reoccurences and  providing self-management skills

Do I Need to Have an MRI

  • Typically, you won't need one.  Through a thorough history and examination, we can quite reliably diagnose if the pain that you are experiencing is from a herniated disc without an MRI.
  • Commonly, we can begin management of your pain, and treatment to your injured disc right away, without an initial MRI
  • But, if an MRI indicated, we will work with your insurance company to obtain authorization and will assist in getting you scheduled

Treatments that Work For Herniated Discs

Dr. Block has been certified from the McKenzie Institute in McKenzie exercisd protols for cervical and lumbar disc herniations.  These methods are among the most strongly proven non-surgical methods to successfully treat herniated discs.

Other evidence-based treatments that commonly are very effective in recovery from a herniated disc :

  • Flexion/Distraction manual therapy
  • Manual joint and soft tissue manipulation
  • Professional lumbar braces
  • specific exercises that train your muscles to provide increased stability and decompress the disc
  • Interferential electrical muscle stimulation
  • Home based electrical stimulation units
